The Role of Law in Maintaining Society
The role of law in maintaining society and how it can help keep communities safe. While that may sound like something you’d find in a Friedman’s Law Firm brochure, or just the typical fodder for those who “believe in an orderly society,” it really does seem to be what most of us have come to expect from law. In most countries, we are expected to follow rules of the land to ensure that society functions properly, including paying taxes, driving our vehicles safely, taking care of our children, etc. But what I want to talk about today is the role of law in ensuring our safety.
NJ alcohol legal limits are one of those rules that many of us live by every day – or at least know the legal limits for alcohol consumption in New Jersey for being charged with a DUI offense. When you drink and drive and break this law, you put yourself and others on the road in danger. Alcohol-related car crashes result in 300 deaths, 7,500 injuries, and 70,000 crimes in New Jersey. By adhering to legal alcohol limits, you can help protect the community from accidents and crimes.
Of course, we can take this logic beyond just driving under the influence of alcohol. Traffic regulations in general (speed limits, lane change signals, etc.) save the lives of hundreds of thousands of people every year in all countries around the world. Those who break these laws not only put themselves at risk of personal injury, but those around them as well. And we can take this a step further by looking at guidelines for industries that could affect the safety of their workers and the public at large. So many times do we come across workplace accidents and disasters that were easily preventable had those working in the environment adhered to written safety guidelines.
On the other side of the world, we see an example of legal guidelines and societal safety in the flood management policy in Pakistan. That may be a bit confusing for those of us who don’t follow the political climate outside of our own countries, but those who do know that flooding is a serious problem for Pakistan due in large part to climate change. For some reason, the government believed for years that it was too expensive to build dams to protect the people from natural disasters, but water management policies have since changed to include building smarter, safer dams in order to ward off flooding. This helps keep citizens safe from something they cannot control.
By knowing the legal limit for alcohol in NJ, we can make smarter decisions and feel more in control of what happens around us and to those we love. There’s a certain sense of security that comes along with many legal guidelines and regulations. Keep this in mind next time you’re tempted to break the rules – they’re there for a reason.
